In order to improve the sinusoidal degree of the surfacemounted PMSM airgap magnetic field waveform, reduce the harmonics effect of PMSM and ensure the selfstarting ability of the surfacemounted PMSM, a magnet arrayed PMSM was presented. The surface magnetic pole of rotor core was composed of some small magnetic block array. The width and height of small magnetic blocks as well as the interval between arrayed magnets follow a modulation relationship. Through setting reasonably the structure and location of the rotor and magnetic poles, the generated airgap magnetic field waveform is closer to sinusoidal wave. The remaining space between the magnet arrays after modulation was used to set the starting winding in order to generate the asynchronous torque and add the selfstarting function of the surfacemounted PMSM. The ANSOFT simulation analysis has good consistency with the experiment results. It shows that the proposed method of improving the surfacemounted PMSM magnetic field waveform more sinusoidal is feasible, and the validity and efficiency of new selfstarting method and structure are proved.
